Part 2 [Of the bylaws]: Membership
The members of the Society are the applicants for the incorporation of the Society, and those persons who have subsequently become members, and in accordance with these bylaws and, in either case, have not ceased to be members.
2.2 A person may apply to the Directors for membership in the Society and on acceptance by the Directors or a membership committee appointed by these Directors and, subject to section 2.5 (2), on payment of annual membership fees that person shall be a member.
2.3 Every person seeking to be a member shall agree to uphold the constitution, to adhere to the purposes of the Society, and to comply with these bylaws.
2.4 Subject to section 2.5 (2), every member, to remain in good standing, shall pay an annual membership fee and complete an annual renewal application form.
2.5 (1) Subject to subsection (2), annual membership fees shall be the sum of twenty-five dollars ($25.00) or such other amount that the members may determine at a general meeting.
2.5 (2) The annual membership fee shall be waived for persons who are: a) self-declared as living with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS); b) self-declared as living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); or c) registered as active volunteers with the Society, including the Directors of the Society d) living with a related illness as determined by the members at a general meeting.
2.5 (3) To maintain the status of member in good standing, persons included in section 2.5 (2) must complete an annual renewal application form.
2.6 A member whose membership has lapsed will be deemed a member in good standing for the 90 days immediately following the date on which their membership lapsed. Should that 90-day grace period encompass an annual general meeting or an extraordinary general meeting, the member must renew their membership on or before the day of the meeting to be considered a member in good standing.
2.7 A person shall cease to be a member of the Society: a) by delivering their resignation in writing to the Secretary of the Society or by mailing it or delivering it to the address of the Society; b) on their death; c) on being expelled in accordance with these bylaws; or d) on ceasing to be a member in good standing.
2.8 A member may be expelled by a special resolution of the members passed at a general meeting.
2.9 The notice of meetings called for the consideration of a special resolution for expulsion shall be accompanied by a brief statement of the reason or reasons for the proposed expulsion.
2.10 The person who is the subject of the proposed resolution for expulsion shall be given an opportunity to be heard at the general meeting before the special resolution is put to a vote.
